How To: Mucking Around in My Art Journal

Hi there!  It's time for another in my series, Mucking Around in My Art Journal.  This time, I'm finishing the other side of the spread I showed last post.

Here's how the full spread turned out.

And here's a fast forward video showing how it all came to be:

You can also watch "How to - Mucking Around in My Art Journal" on YouTube here.

I hope you've been enjoying this series; you can see all the "Mucking Around" posts here!  Let me know in the comments if it's been helpful to you.

Also, as many know, I've been making a lot of art around what's going on right now in the United States.   I hope you'll check them out.

Sanctuary celebrates the dignity of all people, and is inspired by the Elie Wiesel quote that "no human being is illegal."  All proceeds to First Friends.   This design is also available in a button, art print, and stationary cards.

This "Open Your Heart" button celebrates people of all faiths and backgrounds.  All proceeds go to the ACLU of NJ.  It's also available in Red, White and Blue, because tolerance IS patriotic.

You can also buy it as a print.

I hope you'll help me support activism through art!  And today, Tuesday, Zazzle is offering 25% off - so enter the code:  PRESDAYSALES and save!

Are you using your art to express your beliefs or activism?  I'd love to know.  Please share your experience and any links in the comments!

Mucking Around in My Art Journal

Remember that series I started in 2016 - "Mucking Around in my Art Journal?"  That's where I play around with no fixed idea of what I'm doing, and now end point in sight.  Well, inspired by Marjie Kemper's new Facebook Group, #halfhourofart, I'm back at it.  Here's the first installment for 2017!

This is the first spread in a brand new journal (Global Arts Watercolor).  I wanted to cheer myself up while waiting for my friend Lynne to come out of her coma.  (You can read all about that here.)  So I decided to give myself 1/2 hour with happy, warm colors, without any idea of where I was going.

I used the Hearts Flowers and More stencil to texture the background;
Gwen LeFleur's Heraldry stencils for December Stencil Club gave me the angel wings I was looking for, along with some of the other motifs.
The silhouettes are from a magazine page I had pulled out and saved.
And the bottom border is part of my Whimsy Crown stamp from Rubbermoon.

Here's a fast forward video (about 7 minutes) of my 1/2 hour process.

I spent another 1/2 hour the following day finishing the other side of the spread... But you'll have to wait until the next "mucking around" installment to see it!

You can also see this video, and lots of other demos and tutorials, on my YouTube channel.

Thanks for stopping by!

How to Use Inspiration as a Jumping Point

This is another entry in the "Mucking Around in my Art Journal" series.  But this one has a twist.  I was truly stumped and couldn't find a "jumping off" point.  My usual Pinterest Board resource of prompts wasn't doing it for me.  And so I turned to YouTube, and found this wonderful video by Ronda Palazzari, who did a two page spread using string.

That video completely inspired me, and provided me with the jumping off point I needed.

Here's my process, start to finish, in an under 6 minute fast forward video.  In total, I played around with this spread for about two hours in the course of two days.

You can also watch "Mucking Around in my Art Journal IV" on YouTube here.

So many artists give freely of their time and talent on YouTube.  Use their inspiration as jumping off points and live inspired!

Thanks for visiting, and leave me a word or two if you are so moved :)

Mucking Around in My Art Journal III

Here's the third installment of "Mucking Around" in my art journal.  No plan, no destination - just playing in my art journal with no particular goal in mind.

This art journal page started as a gelli print to which I adhered one of my "tough tissue paper" motifs from my lesson for 21Secrets (you can still purchase this "forever yours" class by the way - it's pretty amazing -- 21 artists share videos, techniques, tutorials, etc. for $98).

The page sat idle for months, until I returned to it to experiment with using pink, a color I'm not very comfortable with.  It's wonderful what "mucking around" can lead to!

Here's a just-over-4 minute video showing my process.  I hope you enjoy it.

Mucking Around in My Art Journal II & Giveaway

Here's the second installment of "Mucking Around" in my art journal.  No plan, no destination - just playing in my art journal with no particular goal in mind.

This art journal page started as a "mop up" page as I was working on my lessons for 21Secrets (you can still purchase this "forever yours" class by the way - it's pretty amazing -- 21 artists share videos, techniques, tutorials, etc. for $98).  The page sat idle since February, and then I returned to it to use up excess paint on my palette.  It's wonderful what "mucking around" can lead to!

I used the "Becoming" stencil from StencilGirl Products for the words.

Here's an under-7-minute video of the process - the good, the bad and the ugly!  Enjoy.

You can also watch "Mucking Around in my Art Journal Volume II on YouTube here.
