New Reveal and Cyber Monday Goodies!

n*Studio CJS2018 - Let's Jump!

A few years ago, I had lost some of my creative mojo.  But then I participated in Nathalie Kalbach's Creative Jumpstart event, and got my mojo back in a big way!

I am thrilled to announce that this year, I'll be participating as one of the teaching artists in Creative Jump Start (CJS) 2018.  This is its 7th year - and once again, it's run by the inimitable Nathalie Kalbach!

I hope you'll participate in this one-of-a-kind event starting January 2018 to kick your creativity into high gear!  (Here's just some of the work I created in CJS 2016!)

Throughout January participants get access to 31 downloadable videos from 31 featured artists.  I'm proud to be one of those artists, called “JumpStarters.”

You'll learn techniques, discover new materials, connect with other artists and crafters and -- special for 2018 -- learn recipes not just for mixed media but also for your kitchen.

All of the teaching artists are sharing their favorite recipes - both in and outside the studio!!

I hope you'll head over to Nathalie's site for more details and to sign up!   This link has my affiliate code. I do earn a small percentage for everyone who signs up using my code.  So thank you in advance!
Here's why you should do this today!

CJS2018 will be available from November 27 (10am EST)  - November 29 (11.59pm EST) as a Cyber Monday Special for $40!  Afterwards it will be available for $45 through 12/31.  Beginning January 1, it will be $50.  So sign up today!  n*Studio CJS2018 - Let's Jump!

Zetti art journal page with stencil & stamps - Creative Team Thursday

Hi - It's Marit here for Jessica's Creative Team.  It may have to do with the Spring season; sunny days and Summer laying on the horizon and all: I am all into creating funny collages lately. I especially like to create "Zetti" characters.

For those who don’t know what I am talking about, I found this definition online: "Zetti (aka Zettiology) is a folk art style originated by Teesha and Tracy Moore. There's no real definition, but there are some common characteristics such as static faces, striped legs, shapes for bodies, bright colours, found images, objects and papers, and lots of pointy hats."

Jessica's stencils and stamps are ideal to use on a 'Zetti page' because her stencils, combined with bright colored ink, make for an interesting and happy background.
The stamps add extra images to complete the funny, whimsical and weird pages.

Are you in for creating a fun Zetti page too? The video takes you through my creating process from the blank page right to the finished page.

I would love to see your Zetti page so if you make one, comment here with a link and I will come visit you. Have fun creating!

Marit Barentsen is a passionate art journaler, mixed media artist, art instructor and creative writer from the Netherlands. Marit inherited a passion for words from her mother, who is a writer. Her father taught her to not only “look “ but also “see.”  That combination led Marit to become an art teacher and her art always showed images and words. After art school, she worked as a graphic designer. Years later, she re-discovered the  combination of words and images in art journaling and her art took flight.  Marit's art has been published in various magazines and art books.

How To Create an Interesting Background for a Strong Focal Image

Back in February, I created a fast forward video in which I created a sketch on map paper using Portfolio Pastels.

You can also watch "Fast Forward Pastel Face on Atlas Paper" on YouTube.

This is a technique I teach in my Facing Faces class - and it's very helpful for getting out of your head and any ideas you have about perfection.

I cut her out and adhered her into an altered book journal.  There she sat for months, until I decided she needed a background and a story.  Here's what happened.

Just using that one stencil, Herbs from Stencil Girl, created such an intriguing background for this very strong focal image.   (You can also watch "How to Create an Interesting Background with a Stencil on YouTube.)

Do you have a "go to" technique for creating your backgrounds?  I'd love to know!

How To Extend an Artistic Helping Hand

As summer ends and school begins, most of us feel like we don't have enough time, enough hands, to do all that needs to be done for ourselves, our families, our children, and more.

Here's a way to extend your helping hand - quite literally!  Trace your hand on some cardboard, start to decoupage, stencil, embellish,  and away you go.

This hand was created for a friend of mine who had received a diagnosis that required radiation of her thumb joints.  But you could apply it to anyone!

Here's a video of my process:

Can you imagine giving your hand to someone in this way?  Please share in the comments.   And make sure to check in on Thursday when Karen Gaunt shares her first Creative Team post!
