Mucking Around in My Art Journal

Remember that series I started in 2016 - "Mucking Around in my Art Journal?"  That's where I play around with no fixed idea of what I'm doing, and now end point in sight.  Well, inspired by Marjie Kemper's new Facebook Group, #halfhourofart, I'm back at it.  Here's the first installment for 2017!

This is the first spread in a brand new journal (Global Arts Watercolor).  I wanted to cheer myself up while waiting for my friend Lynne to come out of her coma.  (You can read all about that here.)  So I decided to give myself 1/2 hour with happy, warm colors, without any idea of where I was going.

I used the Hearts Flowers and More stencil to texture the background;
Gwen LeFleur's Heraldry stencils for December Stencil Club gave me the angel wings I was looking for, along with some of the other motifs.
The silhouettes are from a magazine page I had pulled out and saved.
And the bottom border is part of my Whimsy Crown stamp from Rubbermoon.

Here's a fast forward video (about 7 minutes) of my 1/2 hour process.

I spent another 1/2 hour the following day finishing the other side of the spread... But you'll have to wait until the next "mucking around" installment to see it!

You can also see this video, and lots of other demos and tutorials, on my YouTube channel.

Thanks for stopping by!

DIY Spooky Halloween Tags

I designed a brand new Halloween stencil for Stencil Girl!  Here is how it looks, and here are some tags I made with it.

I started off stenciling some of the motifs on circles I punched from an orange gelli print.

And then I went to town, using some of the Distress Inks techniques I learned from Marjie Kemper's class on Craftsy.  Here's a video of my process.

You can also watch DIY Spooky Halloween Tags on YouTube.  I hope this post gave you some ideas.

For some more inspiration, check out THIS awesome tutorial by Kristin Van Valkenburgh.  In her video tutorial, Kristin masterfully demonstrates how she used masking fluid, rub-ons, sea salt, splatters, smudge stick, sparkles, changes in registration and more!

Are you creating anything with a Halloween theme?  Share your links in the comments below.

Until next time,
xoxo

How to Create Cards with Stamps and Stencils

Extra Extra - read all about it -- I have TWO NEW SETS of stamps just released from Rubbermoon.  They are Build a Cosmos, and Build a Neighborhood.  I created both sets based on doodles and watercolors in my sketchbook, which I then played with in Photoshop.  Here's how they looked.

Kristen Powers at Rubbermoon turned them into the most delightful stamps!  Here are pics of the two sets:

You can also select some of the stamps individually, and they mix and match well.  Check out these cards I created with archival ink and Tombow markers:

Using ink techniques I learned from Marjie Kemper in her wonderful class on Craftsy, I created this card, and filmed my process.

Why Online Challenges are Great Creativity Boosters - The 100 Day Challenge - Part 2

Hello!  Today I am sharing the art from days 21 - 40 of my participation in the second 20 days of the #100dayproject on Instagram.  A few weeks ago, I posted days 1 - 20 here.  If you follow my friend Marjie's blogyou know that she is also participating in this creativity party that began on Instagram on April 19th. Each square represents 4 days of posts on Instagram.

The only requirement to be part of the challenge was to commit to some kind of daily creativity (writing, art, photo, cooking - whatever!).  I came up with the idea of #100daysofquirkycritters, and Marjie decided on #100daysofsmallsquares. You can find both our Instagram feeds here: Jessica's Instagram and Marjie's Instagram.

It's amazing how my designs have blossomed from simple quirky critters to an alphabet and now to numbers.  I wonder where I'll go next!

I don't think I would have ever completed this alphabet but for this challenge.  And now I've started on numbers!!

I hope you'll stay tuned to see how the rest of my alphabet shapes up.  You can jump into the challenge any time.   If you're participating in the challenge, please leave your handle and hashtag in the comments.  I'd love to see what you're doing!

Thanks for visiting.  Your comments make me so happy and let me know you were here. I read and treasure every comment and will happily answer any questions as soon as I can.
