Create Vibrant Artwork with Gelli Plate

I love going through some of my older posts; they always inspire me... This post was originally posted on August 5 of 2015.  I hope you'll enjoy a look back at these beautiful, vibrant paintings!


I've been teaching an amazing group of women this summer.  One of them, Lesley, took one of my classes at The Ink Pad.  She contacted me in May, asking if I would come to Long Branch once a week and teach a group in her home.  I'm so glad I said yes!  It's been a great adventure, and I learned so much as I planned a new lesson for each of the six weeks.

Our last lesson was on Tuesday, and it seemed fitting to have a Gelli Plate Party!  None of these women had ever used the gelli plate before, and their excitement and joy was thrilling.  The paint and prints were flying!  All my Stencil Girl stencils were in the mix, plus a big favorite -- Terri Stegmiller's recent design for Stencil Club.

 We used our gelli prints to make illustrations inspired by African Masks, following the steps I used in this post to create a Ganesh Superhero.

and three of the finished pieces.  Aren't they awesome!!!

Here's a picture of all the women at the conclusion of one of our earlier classes.  I have truly enjoyed working with them.

Here's my finished demo piece - inspired by Cecil the Lion and this editorial. 

 Maria McGuire's Greek Border stencil provided the perfect finishing touches.

How to: Make Your Own Dog Treat Container with Stencils and Giveaway

When I created this Dog Stencil and Mask for Stencil Girl Products, I knew I had to make something for my little puppy, Nimby.  

She spends all day with me in her studio, so I thought she deserved a mixed media dog treat container.  She only weighs 5 pounds, so her dog treats are very tiny.  I decided to repurpose a coffee bean container to hold her tiny biscuits!

I used:

An old coffee container

White Gesso

Viva Decor black modeling creme

Yellow acrylic paint

Matte Medium

White Tissue paper

Old Atlas Paper

It was quick and easy to do!  The drying time for the tissue paper is what took the longest :)

Mermaid Madness!

I am thrilled to be part of Stencil Girl Products celebration of "Mermaid Madness!"  

Did you ever play mermaid when you were a kid?  I did.  My hair was really long, and I used to try to swim with my legs together like a long tail, while swishing my hair around in the water.  I'm not sure why mermaids have such an allure, but they do!

Here is a box I made with the stencil I designed, called Mermaids and Masks, to memorialize that playful time in my life. 

And a handmade journal I created using the mermaids and elements from the stencil to pull the different pages together.

I filmed part of my process for this journal.  I hope it gives you some inspiration!
