How to create Vintage Photos with Stencils - Creative Team Thursday with Marit Barentsen

Do you know the feeling that the world seems to change more rapidly when you get older? Or maybe it was the gray and drizzling weather in the Netherlands that brought me in a sentimental mood... whatever the reason was, I felt the need to make an art journal page about the 'good ol' days.' I grew up in a small village where women still wore traditional costumes and horses were used to cultivate the lands... Life was slow and easy when I was a kid.

I noticed that Jessica's stencil "Dots & Dashes" shows a similarity with the edge that used to frame old photo negatives.

That was the starting point to look for old photos and create an art journal spread in black and white, to emphasize the 'good old times.'

I also like the look of gesso smeared through a stencil - you get the most wonderful texture on the pages - so I used another stencil, "Circles & Squares", to add that effect to the page.

In the end, my art journal spread got that old fashioned look that I was looking for.

(I want to thank and applaud my beloved, Marius, for stretching the old fashion effect even further by making this very special video of my creating process.)

Marit Barentsen is a passionate art journaler, mixed media artist, art instructor and creative writer from the Netherlands. Marit inherited a passion for words from her mother, who is a writer. Her father taught her to not only “look “ but also “see.”  That combination led Marit to become an art teacher and her art always showed images and words. After art school, she worked as a graphic designer. Years later, she re-discovered the  combination of words and images in art journaling and her art took flight.  Marit's art has been published in various magazines and art books.
