Boho-Chic Journal Cover by Lizzy Wurmann G., Creative Team Thursday

This is my last post for Jessica Sporn Designs. I want to thank all the team for being so supportive and generous and especially to Jessica for choosing me.

This time I created a journal cover out of an old book. I started by covering everything with black gesso.

Then I chose this beautiful whimsical tree stencil- Judy'sTrees Stencil as my focal image

Covering completely with black gesso too

I rolled magazine paper in different lengths to embellish the cover and applied black gesso again

When everything was dry, I sprayed it with three different pinkish colors by Lindy's Stamp Gang

At this point, I was about to apply white gesso but decided to leave it as you see

Time to paint the tree

As I used cardboard, I felt there was too much dimension so I peel it leaving a thin layer of paper and mounted it on thin cork (which you won't see because I ended covering it with Golden Mica)

To mount it I used two pieces of the cardboard to level the image with the book

I hope you'll have some inspiration to alter any old book you have.

Until next time!
Lizzy

Mixed Media Process with Kristin Van Valkenburgh

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”
— Henry Ford

Happy Thursday! I hope this finds you well!  I can hardly believe it, but today marks my last post for this year’s Jessica Sporn Designs Creative Team. I made 15 videos over the course of the year, happily playing with Jessica’s beautiful collection of stencils from Stencil Girl and stamps from RubberMoon. Her work is unique, elegant, thought-provoking and above all else, filled with love. It was an honor to represent her and her products, this year and always.

I also want to thank DecoArt Media for supplying us with gorgeous, color drenched supplies and beautiful grounds to work with. I’d been a fan before, but now, after using their buttery gesso and thick, rich ink sprays, I can easily say I’m a lifer. . . .

Now, on to this week’s process video entitled, “Come to My Party.” I used the backing of a 9 x 12 pad of paper for this one, as well as a combination of stamping, stenciling, collaging, drawing and fingerprinting for a truly mixed media piece.

I hope you have fun watching, and please do let me know if you try anything similar, I’d LOVE to see what you come up with.

How to Take a Leap of Faith - A Mother's Love

I hate to waste paint - so I made this from wet acrylic paint from a previous project.  As a mask for the "leaper," I used the form I had cut out to make the jumping girl stencil.  Then I sprayed around it with Adirondack color wash to give it some depth.

Using the Balzer Designs punchinella stencil, I added some texture on the left, and painted swirls with watered down gesso.  The lettering is a mix of my hand and stamps.  I painted shadow around the form (right side and under is the mantra I repeat to myself) and I love how it looks like it's popping out of the page!

Also today, a design for Mother's Day.  There's nothing like being a mom to give you perspective on your own mother.  When we're young, we lack the wisdom to appreciate our mother's advice.  By the time we have our own children, we realize all too well that a mother's strength rests in the love of her children.

Thanks Mom - for raising me to be a creative, caring person, just like you!
