Create Vibrant Artwork with Gelli Plate

I love going through some of my older posts; they always inspire me... This post was originally posted on August 5 of 2015.  I hope you'll enjoy a look back at these beautiful, vibrant paintings!


I've been teaching an amazing group of women this summer.  One of them, Lesley, took one of my classes at The Ink Pad.  She contacted me in May, asking if I would come to Long Branch once a week and teach a group in her home.  I'm so glad I said yes!  It's been a great adventure, and I learned so much as I planned a new lesson for each of the six weeks.

Our last lesson was on Tuesday, and it seemed fitting to have a Gelli Plate Party!  None of these women had ever used the gelli plate before, and their excitement and joy was thrilling.  The paint and prints were flying!  All my Stencil Girl stencils were in the mix, plus a big favorite -- Terri Stegmiller's recent design for Stencil Club.

 We used our gelli prints to make illustrations inspired by African Masks, following the steps I used in this post to create a Ganesh Superhero.

Here's a picture of all the women at the conclusion of one of our earlier classes.  I have truly enjoyed working with them.

Here's my finished demo piece - inspired by Cecil the Lion and this editorial. 

 Maria McGuire's Greek Border stencil provided the perfect finishing touches.

Origami Box with Gelli Prints - Creative Team Thursday with Marit Barentsen

Whenever I play with my gelli plate I come out with a whole stack of 'backgrounds.'  I use one or two of those prints for a project that started the 'gelli session' in the first place, but I keep all the leftover paper in a file. The stack grows and grows...

  

My mum once taught me how to fold a paper box with a lid (origami) and so I came up with this little project to fold a box from the leftover backgrounds and film the process to teach you how to do it.

It's a quick and easy way to make good use of old backgrounds (or any other paper for that matter) and a hand fold paper box makes a lovely and personal wrapping to put a small present in, to give to someone on a birthday.

With Easter coming up, you can also fold some boxes and fill them with chocolate eggs or other candy. You can make a whole bunch of boxes, from very small ones (to put one piece of chocolate in) to bigger ones... don't you think that will look good on a decorated Easter table?!

Marit Barentsen is a passionate art journaler, mixed media artist, art instructor and creative writer from the Netherlands. Marit inherited a passion for words from her mother, who is a writer. Her father taught her to not only “look “ but also “see.”  That combination led Marit to become an art teacher and her art always showed images and words. How to Collage with Stencils - Creative Team Thursday with Lizzy Wurmann

Hi,  it's Lizzy with you today. This is my first blog post for Jessica Sporn Designs and I'm very proud to be part of her Creative Team.

I want to share a video tutorial on how I did this collage using  Jessica's gorgeous "Garden Flowers and Leaves Stencil".

First, I'll show you how I like to make my backgrounds with the Gelli Plate.  Then we'll pull it together, step-by-step, so you can create your own collage.

Here's a quick video to take you through all the steps.

Checkout this preview of some of the elements I used.  I love how intricate the "Garden Flowers and Leaves Stencil" turned out with all the layered colors.  Bonus - I only used a portion of the collage pages I created so I have plenty left to use on other projects!

DIY Spooky Halloween Tags

I designed a brand new Halloween stencil for Stencil Girl!  Here is how it looks, and here are some tags I made with it.

I started off stenciling some of the motifs on circles I punched from an orange gelli print.

And then I went to town, using some of the Distress Inks techniques I learned from Marjie Kemper's class on Craftsy.  Here's a video of my process.
