How To Create an Interesting Background for a Strong Focal Image

Back in February, I created a fast forward video in which I created a sketch on map paper using Portfolio Pastels.

You can also watch "Fast Forward Pastel Face on Atlas Paper" on YouTube.

This is a technique I teach in my Facing Faces class - and it's very helpful for getting out of your head and any ideas you have about perfection.

I cut her out and adhered her into an altered book journal.  There she sat for months, until I decided she needed a background and a story.  Here's what happened.

Just using that one stencil, Herbs from Stencil Girl, created such an intriguing background for this very strong focal image.   (You can also watch "How to Create an Interesting Background with a Stencil on YouTube.)

Do you have a "go to" technique for creating your backgrounds?  I'd love to know!
