How To Create a Stash of Background Papers

Welcome to another in my "How To" series - the second Tuesday of every month.  To see past posts click here.

I like to set aside time to just create background papers - without any thought of when and how I'm going to use them.  It's great to have a stash of them available, so that when you're in the "zone," and you need collage elements, you don't have to stop your flow to make them.

Here's a quick and easy technique for creating background papers that will be very usable because of their subtle tone-on-tone design.  All you need is paper (I like to use good quality card stock or color copy paper), white gesso, some cosmetic sponges, a paintbrush, baby wipes, some stamps and black archival ink.  (Check out all my favorite products here.)

Here's an under-5-minute video showing the process!

This way, you'll have all the supplies you need when your muse is visiting and you're creating!   Here are two art journal pages I created with my papers and punches.

I hope this tutorial is helpful to you, and that you'll check back again for more in the "how to" series!

Your comments make me so happy and let me know you were here. I read and treasure every comment and will happily answer any questions as soon as I can.

  10. Brilliant Jessica. I use gesso and stencils in a very similar way to make background papers for stitching into. I tend to brayer on my paints but I must try the baby wipe approach. Hilary
