Don't Be a Debbie Downer

Remember Debbie Downer from Saturday Night Live?  No matter how happy the gathering, she had bad news or negative feelings to share and would bring down the mood of everyone around her.   I have come to realize that I'm a Debbie Downer when I come home from being away.  My husband and daughter are so happy to see me, but then I point out what wasn't done properly while I was away, and just kill the good feelings.

I'm really not sure what it's all about, psychologically, but I don't want to do it anymore!  True, my daughter might not have bathed while I was gone, or had any fresh fruits and vegetables, but in the grand scheme of things, so what?  True, she watched TV instead of doing her homework, and stayed up past her bedtime, but in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter?  My husband is supportive of my going on art retreats, or to hear the Dalai Lama speak.  He does his best, and even though it's not exactly how I would do things, in the end they are both safe and sound, and so excited to see me.  In my absence, my daughter made her lunch for school each day, got herself ready in the morning so she could get to school on time, and helped feed the animals.  So why not point out the positive?  I will try to improve this aspect of myself.  I hereby promise!

By this art journal page, may it be so!

  2. Oh I used to do that with my family...especially when I stretched myself too thin....now over the years I have learned just what you said...it doesn't matter in the big picture. I love the journal pages you did on it.

  3. Love the fun and colorful journal page. :) I get kind of snappy when I'm tired and it takes some effort on my part to look at the positive things instead. First thing is to recognize the problem. Now you can work from there. :)

  4. so true and yet sometimes the negative has to be pointed out but it's the way it is done that makes the difference.

  5. What a stunning journal page! This is one of the things I love about art journals- how it can help sort things out and reinforce all the good!

  6. I agree with Carolyn that journaling is brilliant for helping us to sort ourselves out and you've made something beautiful as well.

I love the different fonts, colours and messages.

  7. Oh my gosh, I was raised by Debbie Downers. She was so funny on SNL!!!.. Oh, but negativity reigned while I was a kid, and we were all just suffocated in it! Still to this day, that kind of thinking is hard to erase, and I have to be very conscious not to act the same way. If I catch myself saying something negative, I try to look on the bright side, and as best I can counteract it with a compliment, a joke, or anything positive I can come up with. And at the end of a day, I try to remember and/or journal my blessings.. thanking God for the many He brings me. In the right and proper perspective, it really isn't so very hard, I don't think, to keep positive and on the bright side of life! Great post!.. Have a great weekend! ~tina

  10. Great post. I do it too, the control thing is so hard to let go of but you are right, what the heck does it matter. I love your page and will try and remember all your words next time I start to be a Debbie Downer too! xox

  13. Isn't that what we do, as moms, want control? I do it all the time. I went away when the girls were younger. They got a away with things when dad was in charge.. or should I say "they" were in charge. I think so. Even last weekend, at Art is You, I had a nice list of groceries for hubbie to get.. did he get them?NOOOOO! I hoped my fridge would have been full when I got home. I love Rachel Dratch as Debbie Downer. I've learned to let things go now as I get older. Have to pick your battles. You want to be happy or do you want to be right? Love your page and I went on too long. Sorry.

  18. Beautiful page!. I so agree with you :). Think only positive even when we had a bad day, because positiveness would eventually wipe out all the negativeness. Simply because it carries love energy :). LOVE how you made promise in journal pages like this. Hugs.

  20. Thanks for the reminder, Jessica. It is so easy to see such happenings in the life of others and not recognise it in ourselves. Beautiful journal page with color and life! I think I may have missed the 3Pm deadline on Fall Fearless, but anyway, my first journal page! Thanks to you and carolyn for hosting.
