I like to set aside time to just create background papers - without any thought of when and how I'm going to use them. It's great to have a stash of them available, so that when you're in the "zone," and you need collage elements, you don't have to stop your flow to make them.

Here's a quick and easy technique for creating background papers that will be very usable because of their subtle tone-on-tone design. All you need is paper (I like to use good quality card stock or color copy paper), white gesso, some cosmetic sponges, a paintbrush, baby wipes, some stamps and black archival ink. This way, you'll have all the supplies you need when your muse is visiting and you're creating! Here are two art journal pages I created with my papers and punches.
