How to: Mixed Media “Tiny Homes” - Creative Team Thursday with Kristin Van Valkenburgh

Three, 3 x 6 Altered Tins

"When you invite people to your home, you invite them to yourself."
- Oprah Winfrey

So here’s the thing: I collect stuff. A lot of stuff. And although I know I’m not alone in my hoarding for future - albeit unknown - art projects, my stash has gone way beyond decorative papers and ephemera to include things as random as a box of rusted tin and metal that I found in the desert.

So what to do with old tin containers that came to me perfectly rusted and begging for glitter? Make Tiny Homes of course! And since I was going with the house theme, I thought it terribly appropriate to use the Build-a-Villa Stamps that I’m currently obsessed with from Jessica’s line of stamps with Rubber Moon.

Wanna create your own tiny assemblage? All you need is a thin metal container, fabric (I used canvas fabric by the yard), your favorite stamps and some sort of sparkle.

See this project step-by-step on our Creative Team YouTube Channel.

After all, what good is a tiny home without a tiny bit - or a lot bit - of sparkle.

With Colorful Kisses,
Kristin xo

A childhood obsession with Hollywood starlets led to an early life in the theater, where Kristin Van Valkenburgh spent many happy days on set and behind the scenes as both an actress and makeup artist for the stage. Kristin has a passion for all things mixed media and loves to create whimsical pieces with lots of layers, bright, poppy colors, big eyes and positive affirmations. Her work has been featured in numerous Stampington publications including Somerset Studio, SomersetStudio Gallery, Somerset Life, Somerset Apprentice, Artists’ Cafe and Art Journaling.

You can find Kristin on her blogYouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

  2. Such a great project Kristin! I am thinking to 'alter' the idea and make the boxes from match-boxes... to give to my friends - with a candle - when X-mas comes
