Personalized Planner Stickers - Creative Team Thursday with Emma Tildesley

First of all, Happy New Year to everyone!

For my first video of 2017, I thought it would be fun to share with you how I make my own stickers to put in your diaries, planners, calendars, and journals.

I find this a really fun way to add interesting elements to your planners.  Plus, this gives you a way to personalize your planners to fit your style.  Go ahead, create your own themes that you may not be able to find elsewhere!

Art Journaling with Dina Wakley

Before getting to my post, I want to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year! May your year ahead be filled with sweetness and many blessings.

Recently, I attended a wonderful class at The Ink Pad given by Dina Wakley.

Do you know Dina?  She is an artist, author, and designer of stencils, paints, brushes and more for Ranger.  She is also a wonderful teacher - puts you at ease immediately with her encouraging delivery.  Her default response to any question is "the answer is yes!"

I was lucky to share this class with Marjie Kemper, who recently blogged about her experience in class here.









The class was called "Beyond the Ink Pad" and was about using your stamps as first layers, so that they come through your background and become part of the story that your focal images are telling.  I often use stamps in my work, but after this class, I will definitely be using them more.  As always, it was amazing to see how different all of our pages came out, though we all followed Dina's instructions and techniques.

Of course, I couldn't resist adding my Stencil Girl stencils to the mix... above you can see my Medieval Leaves stencil interacting with Pam Carriker's beautiful Ophelia face stamp.  

In the background, you can see the top of Ganesha's head from the Ganesh Deity Stencil.

And in the foreground are elements from the Squares and Circles Stencil interacting with the Dress Form stamp from Tim Holtz.  

I love being a student!  I always learn precious nuggets to take away and incorporate into my art.

After Hurricane Sandy, My Own Private Art Journal Extravaganza

After Hurricane Sandy, my town still hosts lots of trees that just pulled out of the sidewalk -- or sometimes uprooted the sidewalks -- as they fell.   The township has been great about removing branches from the road, but there are still trunks of trees and lots of branches piled up along the curb.  The top left picture is directly across the street from my house;  I took it from my studio window. 

One of the biggest problems, besides lack of power, is that everyone is running out of gas.  There have been fist fights at some stations.  It's crazy.  I have two friends and their dog camping out at my house until their power is turned back on.  I have friends stopping by for showers and to charge their phones.  I am lucky to be able to offer these "luxuries!"

With no gas to drive with, and so many places closed, it's been a prolific week for art! 

LIST IT TUESDAY:   The prompt this month is "quick fixes."  All I could think of was "rescuing" art journal pages I hated (more below on that).  This kind of curmudgeonly thought prompted me to think about my mental outlook this week, which has been cranky and judgmental.  My quick fix for this has been to try to cultivate a little compassion, and at least keep my mouth shut.  This thought inspired this art journal page:

 

Speak kindly or don't:  What is (negatively) thought but not spoken is better than what is thought and then said, which is better than what is said and then acted upon.   

Here are two more "quick fixes" of art journal pages I had abandoned in disgust!

This was a page I finished after our hurricane preparations.  The photo at the center of this page is from an article about manipulating photography before photoshop.  The words: "embrace imagination.. Think Different!" are advice I gave to myself as we stocked up on batteries, candles, and I made vats of soup.

I love how this page ended up, even as much as I disliked what it started as!  The only thing you can see from the original is the gorgeous Stencil Girl borders.  I don't know what I'm going to write on this page -- I like it so much the way it is, it might take a while before something worthy comes to me!

The CALENDAR PROJECT:  It wasn't hard to find the time to finish my October calendar and start my November one.

 

 The first box in October says:  This year, Halloween WILL HAPPEN in October.  It can't possibly snow again.  The last box says: NO Halloween this October again!  Who would-a thought it!

 

I originally intended the openings for the November days to look like leaves.  But I think they look like Byzantine onion domes!

Working on the November calendar gave me a chance to practice the newest Zentangle, Bunzo. (Which also reminded me of Byzatine onion domes!)   I haven't linked to the Diva in a while, and look forward to visiting some of the links there.

Even though I joined in with the calendar project at the end of 2012, I really enjoy it, and am looking forward to continuing in 2013.
