How Online Classes Can Jumpstart Your Creativity

The New Year is chock full of lots of inspiration in the form of online classes.  While I love in person classes, taking a class on line can allow you to experiment in the privacy of your own home and at your own pace.
From Rae Missigman's lesson.
I signed up for the Documented Life Project and Creative Jumpstart 2016.   I haven't jumped into  DLP 2016 yet, but Creative Jumpstart has truly captivated me.  The first thing I think upon waking is - what does Nathalie Kalbach have in store for us today? I can't wait to watch the video, which goes live daily at 7AM EST!  This year, Nat has picked different famous artists and asked mixed media artists to "jump off" of their styles.  You still have lots of time to jump in.

Here's what I created in the first week, which was inspired by Matisse.

Inspiration from Julie Balzer's lesson.
Inspiration from Carmen Sanchez's lesson
Inspiration from Joanne Sharpe's lesson
Can you see Matisse's inspiration?    But do they still look like "me?"  Do you have a favorite?  I'd love to know!

Like my online classes, Creative Jumpstart 2016 is completely downloadable - you can watch the videos as many times as you like.  I'm glad because I'm learning a lot!

  1. super projects Jessica!! I agree that online classes are a wonderful way to learn and art-at your own pace. I've heard of your classes (I took Jumpstart for two years several years ago)and they are tempting but my plate is full with current classes. Looking forward to seeing your results as you go!

  2. I love the middle one. I'm a flower child. Your colors and the way you are creating from the inspiration is inspiring in itself. The nice thing with many artists is that there will be a few that will really captivate you. I've only downloaded a couple so far that I really want to go back to.

  3. Good Morning, Jessica...I'm in Creative Jumpstart as well....it is fascinating, isn't it? I can't pick a favorite of your art pieces! I love the one from Rae's lesson...so colorful and playful. The one from Julie's lesson is so spontaneous and reminds me of Frida Kahlo. Carmen's lesson really brought out the still life and flowers...so wonderful and completely different from the others. I'm missing the Joanne Sharpe's inspiration because all I can remember about her class is her wonderful lettering. I like your painting of the woman though...reminds me of another Julie inspiration. It looks like you're having a totally good time in Nat's class. I haven't tried any yet but after seeing what you've been doing, I feel like jumping into my art supplies this afternoon. Time is always a factor, isn't it?...I want to go into my art room right now but a busy schedule is pulling me away...darn! Thanks so much for sharing your art this morning...I really enjoyed it! 4. Isn't Jump Start fun and inspiring. I am so thrilled to be in it. I love the artist takes on the masters and I am even keeping up, that is how inspired I am. Love your takes. I haven't braved the portrait yet but am sure that will happen this week.

  5. Wow! I love your pieces and, yes, I can see the influence of others while retaining the "you-ness". Remarkable! I certainly enjoyed seeing these paintings this morning. They brightened my day. It must be a lot of fun. So much so that I'd love to dive in. I must restrain myself, however, as I am already overbooked on online inspiration.

I agree with you. Taking these classes online really stretches creativity.
